How to Beat the Heat
|

|
Every summer we can expect the temperatures to soar into the 30’s for a few days., but this year has been exceptionally hot, with heat alerts lasting days and even weeks on end. Extremely hot weather can affect not only your golf game but your health as well. at stroke can be caused when your body overheats and becomes dehydrated. Signs of heat stroke include, feeling lightheaded, dizziness, feeling disoriented and nauseous. To prevent heatstroke, you need to keep the body cool. Wear light comfortable clothes, such as cotton shorts and double mercerized shirts that breathe easily and help to keep you body cool when you sweat. A hat is a must during hot weather as it will protect you from the heat and also from the harmful rays of the sun. Sunscreen of course is a must. I also like to carry a large towel around my neck on a hot day. Dip the centre of the towel in cold water and it acts like a portable air conditioner. Another problem on hot days is dehydration. Try freezing a couple of bottles of water the night before you play. This will guarantee plenty of cold water during your round the next day. Many clubs now do not supply water on the course, so make sure you bring your own source. Fresh fruits and salty snacks such as peanuts or cashews will help provide you with a quick boost of energy and also help to replace the salt your body looses when you perspire. You can also beat the heat by altering the times that you play. Early morning and evening rounds are often more pleasant, but make sure you book them early, as these are popular times during the “dog days of summer”. Taking a cart will also help you stay cool. In Las Vegas they actually have solar powered carts with air conditioners! Conventional carts will provide a roof over your head and the breeze caused when you drive them helps keep you cool. If your club allows coolers, then cold drinks should be stored on ice for when you need them. The good news is that fall will soon be here and the temperatures will be cooler. We then can start to complain about seeing our breath during our early morning rounds. Summer, enjoy it while it lasts. Keep cool and protect yourself from the heat. Next Week: Curing Your Slice
